Hiking is one of the best activities for getting into nature and experiencing some of the best parts of the world.
It has many benefits to our mental, physical and social health that can keep us healthy in the long term.
But why do people like hiking? What are the main reasons that people enjoy getting out on the trail and in nature?
Let’s go over 15 of the best reasons to put on your hiking shoes and hit the trails.
Why Do People Like Hiking?
There are many, many reasons why people enjoy hiking, and each for their own.
I’m going to give you some of the most common ones right here, so you can maybe figure out why you do it.
1. Immersing Yourself in Nature
One of the top reasons why people hike is to immerse themselves in nature.
No matter what the trail is, through the forest, across a plain, wandering through the desert, or climbing a mountain, you’re in nature.
Getting out on the trail will allow you to experience peace and tranquility like nowhere else.
It’s something different than what you see every day sitting in your home or at your desk at work.
Especially if you’re somewhere other than home, you’ll really get to experience something different and feel connected with nature.
2. Fresh Air is a Stress Reliever
Many people use hiking as a stress reliever because getting out into fresh air is great for clearing your mind.
Escaping those stresses of everyday life is something that getting out into nature can help with.

Breathing in fresh air rather than the stagnant air of your house or workplace is extremely beneficial to your brain and may help you feel more peaceful.
The air also increases the oxygen in your brain, which can help boost your serotonin.
Clean, fresh air also helps with having healthy lungs.
3. Great Physical Exercise
Hiking is great physical exercise, which is something that we know everyone needs in order to live a healthy life.
Even just a short 1-mile hike will do the body some good and helps keep your body in good shape.
Longer hikes can help tone your legs and buttLike they say; if you don’t move it, you’ll lose it!
4. Inexpensive Way to See the World
Traveling can be expensive and participating in tours to see different things definitely can break the bank.
But if you’re visiting a new country and want to see something different, heading out for a hike is a great way to do it.

You can typically visit new hikes with something as simple as a day pass that costs usually between $5 to $20, depending on where you are.
Compared to other activities, this can be a very inexpensive way to see what other countries or cities have to offer.
It’s even a great way to explore your own home state or country!
5. Seeing the World’s Best Views
On top of hiking being an inexpensive way to travel, it also allows you to see the best views that you can’t see from the road.
I truly believe that some of the world’s most magical views are seen from hiking trails.
So personally, when I go somewhere, I love to find the best hike in the area and check it out.
This gives me a whole new perspective of the area and let’s me something that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
It really makes me appreciate the place more.
6. Getting Away From Screens
Another reason why people love hiking is that it gets you away from all of the screens and technology that we have in today’s world.
Let’s face it, no matter how hard you try, it’s tough to go a day without a screen.
From walking into the grocery store to sitting at home to pumping gas, there are little or big screens everywhere.

But not out in nature!
On the hiking trail, you can truly allow yourself to escape from technology and just fully disconnect.
Besides the exception of your GPS system (for safety!), you won’t have to look at a screen for the entire day if you don’t want to.
7. Pushing Yourself to New Levels
There are so many hikes out there that are extremely physically challenging.
I mean the kind where it’s like, ‘I don’t know that I’m going wake to see the next day if I continue on this hike,’ challenging.
But that’s really the fun in it.
Hiking gives you chances to push yourself beyond your limits and beyond your comfort zone.
You get the opportunity to challenge yourself and see that you’re a lot stronger than you think you are!
I mean, it’s not every day that you can say that you actually climbed a mountain!
8. Seeing Unique Wildlife
One of my favorite parts of hiking is that I always have the chance to see unique wildlife.
I love getting to fully experience the nature of the area that I’m visiting, so seeing their wildlife is quite incredible.
Whether it’s the bears of Yellowstone, the monkeys of Costa Rica, or the gorillas of Africa, there are so many epic animals out there to see.

So many of them are hard to see if you aren’t on a hiking trail!
And on top of that, the unique flora and plant life that grows in each individual place is astounding.
There are so many different wildflowers and plants that I had no idea existed until I saw them while hiking.
9. Disconnecting From Real Life
Getting away from the troubles of real life is one of the biggest benefits of hiking.
Being out on the trail allows you to forget about your struggles in life for a few hours.
While you’ll still have to go back and deal with them afterward, at least you’ll get to forget they exist for a little bit.
10. Meeting Like-Minded People
Meeting people who enjoy the same things as you is always good for your mental and social health.
It’s nice to have people that you can get out and hit the hiking trails with who will have just as much fun as you are.
You’d be surprised at how many people you can actually meet out on the trail that will become long-time friends!
Or people that you meet outside of hiking that end up becoming your hiking partners!
11. Improving Mental Health
Aside from just our physical health, being outside can also really improve our mental health.
This is another huge reason why people like hiking.
If you’re feeling down, going outside has been proven to help make us feel better.
According to the American Psychological Association, just a few minutes of being outside in a green space can perk up our brains.

The sounds of nature can help us perform better and contact with nature helps increase happiness and positivity.
I think that these are things that we all need more of in our lives.
12. Making Family Memories
Hiking is such a great hobby that the entire family can participate in.
Many families will go on annual camping and hiking trips to just spend time together out in nature.
It’s a great way to make new family memories and create fun traditions together.
13. It’s a Hobby for All Ages
Going along with making new family memories, another benefit of hiking is that it’s great for people of all ages.
Whether you have a baby or an older grandparent, there are many hiking trails out there to accommodate everyone.

There is also gear to accommodate everyone including hiking poles to help older people and baby-carrying decides for the youngest explorers.
People of all ages are able to enjoy hiking, which makes it a great life-long hobby.
14. Chatting With Good Friends
If you have friends that you haven’t seen in a while and you’re looking for a time to catch up, getting out on a nature trail is a great way to do so.
Even something as simple as a quick 1-mile trail near your home, hiking trails are great places to talk and catch up with old pals.
Or, plan a weekly outing with some of your friends and catch up with them every single week!
This is also a great way to get out with your partner and both experience some fresh air.
15. Great Way to Get Into Photography
If you’re looking to get into photography, hitting the hiking trail is a great way to do so.
There are so many beautiful views to be seen along the trails, just waiting to be photographed.

Whether you have a beginner camera, an advanced one, or are just looking for iPhone photography, you can learn it on the trail.
Watch a few YouTube videos before heading out and put your new skills to the test.
